An IoT app's cost is spread across four layers: the mobile app, the link to the device, the cloud and the update path. A companion app for an existing device typically starts around $12,000; a full product with firmware, app and cloud starts around $30,000 with a team like ours.
Where the money goes, layer by layer
| Layer | What it includes | What drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Onboarding, control screens, accounts | Platforms, number of screens, offline needs |
| Device link | BLE or Wi-Fi pairing, command protocol | Protocol complexity, background behaviour, firmware maturity |
| Cloud | Accounts, device ownership, sync, alerts | Users, data volume, integrations |
| Updates | OTA firmware and app releases | Safety requirements, rollout tooling |
Typical starting points
- Companion app for an existing device: from $12,000, about 6–10 weeks.
- Full product with firmware, app and cloud: from $30,000, about 12–20 weeks.
- Fleet platform with dashboards, OTA and support tools: from $45,000, about 14–24 weeks.
These are our own starting prices, not market averages. The final number depends on the choices below, and a scoped plan turns the range into a fixed price.
Choices that change the price
- One platform first, or iOS and Android together.
- A documented device protocol, or one still being designed.
- Accounts and cloud sync at launch, or in phase two.
- OTA updates built in from day one, or added later at higher cost.
FAQ
Why do IoT apps cost more than normal apps?
Because a large part of the work is the link to the device: pairing, reconnection and updates, tested on real hardware and many phones.
Can we reduce cost by using Flutter?
Usually yes. One codebase for iOS and Android, with small native modules only where Bluetooth behaviour needs them.
