What a BLE companion app really costs in 2027

The five things that move the price, real ranges by scope, and where hardware teams waste money before a line of code is written.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Most BLE companion apps for an existing device land between $12,000 and $45,000. Where you land depends on five things, and you can control most of them.

Five things that move the price

1. Platforms. iOS only, Android only, or both. A cross-platform framework like Flutter keeps one codebase, but Bluetooth behaviour still has to be tested on each platform separately.

2. Pairing and protocol complexity. A device with five simple commands is a different job from one that streams sensor data, needs secure bonding or supports several firmware versions at once.

3. The state of your firmware. A documented command set saves weeks. Undocumented or still-changing firmware is the most common reason app budgets overrun.

4. Cloud, accounts and updates. User accounts, device ownership, data sync and over-the-air updates each add a backend that has to be built, secured and hosted.

5. Regulated categories. Medical and payment devices need extra documentation, security reviews and testing, which adds time even when the features look simple.

Ranges by scope

ScopeTypical rangeTimeline
Control app, one platform, no accounts$12K – $18K6–8 weeks
iOS + Android with accounts and cloud sync$20K – $35K10–14 weeks
Full product: apps, cloud, OTA, dashboard$35K – $45K+14–20 weeks
Ranges are typical for teams of our size. Your exact number depends on the five factors above.

How to spend less without cutting corners

  • Freeze and document the BLE command set before app development starts.
  • Launch on one platform first if most of your customers use it.
  • Ship accounts and cloud sync in phase two if the device works offline.
  • Send real units to the developer early. Simulators hide the bugs that cost the most.
  • Pay for a scoped spec up front instead of accepting a guessed quote.

FAQ

Is Flutter good enough for BLE apps?

For most products, yes. Native code is worth it mainly for heavy background streaming or very tight power budgets.

What does it cost to maintain after launch?

Plan for yearly iOS and Android updates, hosting and fixes. A support plan usually costs a fraction of the build each year.

Can the app be built before the hardware is final?

Partly. Screens and backend can start on a mock device, but pairing and control need real hardware before launch.
