The challenge

What the client needed.

A manufacturer of gate automation and telemetry products had ESP32-S3-CAM hardware and needed custom firmware to make it a working connected product.

The device had to join Wi-Fi, take its configuration and report its status over a serial link, and handle two-way voice calls over SIP/VoIP through a small speaker, all on one microcontroller.

What we built

Network, audio and configuration on one chip.

ESP-IDF firmware on the ESP32-S3 runs the Wi-Fi connection, a SIP/VoIP audio path with echo cancellation, and a serial command interface used for configuration and status.

How we built it

The decisions that made it work.

  1. 1

    ESP-IDF, as the client required

We built on Espressif's native framework instead of a higher-level one, which gives full control of Wi-Fi, audio and memory on the ESP32-S3.

  2. 2

    Configuration over serial

Wi-Fi and SIP settings and status checks go through a TTL serial command interface, so units can be configured with a simple USB-to-TTL adapter.

  3. 3

    Echo cancellation in firmware

With the speaker and microphone close together in a gate unit, the audio pipeline cancels echo so calls stay clear.

  4. 4

    Phased workstreams

The firmware was developed in phases alongside the client's wider product portfolio.

The outcome
